City adds curbside textile recycling

The City of Montgomery has partnered with Simple Recycling to collect and recycle clothing and small housewares at the curb. This service will be running in conjunction with the resident’s normal collection day and began December 11. The program is no cost to the resident or the City. In fact, Simple Recycling will pay the city $20.00 a ton of materials collected. Research has shown that this program diverts hundreds of tons of material from the landfill each year. Montgomery residents who currently donate items to charity are encouraged to continue to do so. The partnership with Simple Recycling is not meant to replace current donations to local charities, but rather, to capture materials that are currently going to the landfill. Residents will receive a postcard introducing the program from Simple Recycling in late November. A second mailer will arrive the first week of December that will contain two orange recycling bags. The orange bags and special orange stickers are used to identify items to be collected. Donated clothing, linens, and other textiles may be in good (reusable/resalable) or damaged (stained, torn, irreparable) condition. They must be dry and clean. No wet, moldy items are allowed. Housewares should be in fair, working order with the purpose of reuse. Items acceptable for collection include the following: Clothing and Accessories

  • Men, women and children’s clothing
  • Coats and jackets
  • Hats
  • Jewelry
  • Purses and backpacks
