WELLER PARK: the City’s playground

Each Montgomery Park has unique features that attract residents and contribute to making Montgomery a better place to live and nurture a family.

This month’s focus is on Weller Park, located at 10021 Weller Road.  The most noticeable recent improvement has been the removal of the old chain link fence between the north side of the park and Good Shepherd Parish grounds.  Many new trees have been planted, primarily oaks which naturally tend to thrive in the Weller area soil.  The combined area is a significant enhancement to the park entrance and drive.

Volleyball Courts

This summer saw much more use of the sand volleyball courts.  In late spring, new sand was added and court boundary lines and nets were replaced.  Weller is the only park in Montgomery with two adjacent sand volleyball courts (a single court is also located in Swaim Park.)

Walking Trail

Weller Park has the longest walking trail in the Montgomery park system.  Wide enough for two strollers or a jogging partner, the paved three-quarter mile circular walking trail begins at the playground.  It connects to the Montgomery walkway system on the south to the Good Shepherd Parish fields to the north and to the new Vintage Club development to the west.

Sports Park

Weller Park offers the largest sports facility in the Montgomery park system.  Four irrigated soccer fields, three baseball fields, four tennis courts, two sand volleyball courts, a concession stand and the largest sports parking capacity which is nearly full on busy summer Saturdays.

Playground

The playground, which stays busy most days, offers the largest variety of playscapes for toddlers and young children.  Mothers also like the close proximity of the restrooms to the play area, which is in the shadow of one of the largest trees in the park system — an old Maple with a trunk that is 13 feet around.
