City Council will be considering an update to the Montgomery Code of Ordinances which would ban the sheltering, maintenance, or keeping of any livestock (horses, mules, pigs, sheep, cattle geese, ducks, turkeys, chickens, goats or other farm-type animals) within the City of Montgomery until the matter can be more fully studied by the Planning Commission. The second step of the process is for the Planning Commission to study under what conditions if any would livestock be permitted within the city.

Ohio National Financial Services, one of Montgomery’s premier businesses located at One Financial Way near the Pfeiffer Road/I-71 interchange, is celebrating 100 years of service to the community during 2009. To mark its 100th anniversary, Ohio National has announced its commitment to fund construction of ten Habitat for Humanity homes over the next five years. Each home symbolizes a decade in Ohio National’s 100 year history. The $780,000 gift represents the largest ever one-time gift to Cincinnati Habitat for Humanity.

RecycleBank scores major success

Montgomery residents have increased the amount of items they recycle by about 72 percent compared to the same period in 2006-2007! During that same period, residents reduced the amount of trash going into the landfill by about 25 percent.

Parks survey prompts upgrades in Johnson Nature Preserve

Over the next three years, Montgomery has plans to improve the Johnson Nature Preserve. These changes are a result of suggestions received during the Parks Study. The kick off for the improvements ties in nicely with the ten year memorial of the 1999 tornado. The April 9, 1999 tornado significantly damaged the Nature Preserve.

Montgomery to host Tree City Awards in 2010

The City of Montgomery has been chosen by the Southwest Ohio Region of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to host the 2009 Tree City USA Awards Ceremony. The Ceremony will take place on April 23, 2010, at the Montgomery Inn in Montgomery’s Heritage District.

Montgomery buys all-electric car

The City of Montgomery recently purchased a GEM car, an all electric vehicle manufactured by Global Electric Motorcars, a Chrysler company. The vehicle has a top speed of 25 mph and is designated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under the classification as a low-speed vehicle or Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV).

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has provided federal funds to 33 Ohio counties, including the City of Montgomery, to offset the costs of responding to the September 14 wind storm.

Agreements expand parking options in Heritage District

A review of comments provided in the Open City Hall forum on the City’s web site provided insight that most respondents had some level of familiarity about the Heritage District and what it has to offer. They also said they found new and interesting businesses by walking along the brick sidewalks. One issue that was not mentioned in responses - but is often asked - is, "Where can one park when visiting or shopping in the Heritage District?"

The tornado of 1999 impacted many in Montgomery, with the F-4 tornado leaving devastation in its path. In the February Montgomery Bulletin, there was an article titled "Poor Economic Climate Stalls Local Projects" which provided an update on how the economic problems of the nation have impacted the progress of local community development projects. Summit targets common concerns of civic groups

In Early November, 17 of Montgomery’s Civic Groups participated in a Summit to discuss common organizational challenges, such as attraction of new members, fund raising, volunteerism and effective communication.

City honored for "Making Your Tax Dollars Count"

Ohio Auditor Mary Taylor has presented the City of Montgomery with the "Making Your Tax Dollars Count" award for the fiscal year 2007 audit. Fewer than five percent of all Ohio government agencies are eligible for this award.
