Police Department Youth Programs
D.A.R.E.
D.A.R.E. or Drug Abuse Resistance Education is a collaborative effort by a D.A.R.E. certified Montgomery Police Officer, educators, students, parents and community of the Sycamore School District to offer an educational program in the classroom to prevent or reduce drug abuse and violence among children and youth. Students are taught to recognize and resist the many direct and subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants, or other drugs or to engage in violence. During the 2000-2001 school year, D.A.R.E. touched the lives of approximately 1000 children in the Sycamore District.
Safety Village
The City of Montgomery will conduct its Safety Village this summer for children entering Kindergarten or First Grade. Safety Village is a one-week, summer safety camp where children learn about various aspects of child safety. Children will learn to make wise decisions in potentially dangerous situations, as well as how to handle emergencies they may encounter. Students will also learn basic rules of pedestrian and traffic safety, in addition to fire, personal, animal, water and school bus safety.
Third Grade Safety Belt Program
The Third Grade Safety Belt Program is a unique program offered by the Ohio Department of Public Safety through the Montgomery Police Department. Third grade students in the Sycamore School District are sworn in as Safety Belt Deputies. These third graders are earning their badges by learning the importance of wearing safety belts through direct contact with a Montgomery Police Officer. This classroom program consists of a 30-minute lesson consisting of the importance of safety belt use. Students learn about safety belts through discussion, activities and demonstrations. Each child receives material and information along with a safety belt badge. The third grade safetybelt deputies pledge to wear their safety belts and to remind others to always buckle up.
