Fire Prevention Week

Fire prevention week always falls in October. This is the week we make the biggest push in the elementary schools with our fire prevention message. It is in this age group that we recognize our ability to make the most significant impact on fire prevention. As you already are aware, this age group will dog their parents to achieve compliance in a variety of areas. If we send them home to practice fire drills, check the smoke detectors or to move matches and lighters out of reach, they’ll make you do it. We also are aware if the wrong message gets in their head, the ’ll do that too.

Young children have a natural curiosity of fire. If not properly addressed, they will play with flame in hiding; in closets or under a blanket in bed, with potentially catastrophic results. By recognizing that curiosity, but showing the dangers resulting from the careless use of fire, we can reduce or eliminate that hazard. Fire safety messages taught at a young age will stay with a child as they grow into young adults.

When your child comes home and wants to “practice” what to do in an emergency, encourage them and participate. Having Mom & Dad STOP-DROP-and ROLL with them makes learning safety fun. Practicing what to do in an emergency is a family activity, it can be fun… and it can save a life. Use this week to practice what to do should the smoke detector goes off. Who goes where and who does what is answered easier before the emergency happens.

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) - Do you know it?

We offer CPR courses beginning with elementary school ages on through senior citizens proving you're never to young or old to learn.

Infant Car Seat Inspections

This free inspection of your infant car seat installation will help to insure the safety of your child should you be involved in an accident. This program is designed to evaluate the car seat you are using and to verify its correct installation. We don't install it for you, rather we teach you to correctly install it yourself so you can remove and reinstall it without worry.

The training necessary to fully understand all the various car seats manufactured and the correct way to install them in different vehicles limits the number of fire personnel that are certified to do this for our community. Appointments are necessary and should be made as far in advance as possible. Have it checked before you need it.

Meet the Firefighter

Meet the firefighter is a preschool program we use to introduce young children to firefighters. It was found that when we were outfitted in all of our protective gear, we were intimidating to most children. If confronted by us in an emergency, these children were apt to run and hide from us making rescue more difficult. We have the children meet us dressed like everyone else, and then we put on our gear piece-by-piece in front of them and encourage them to touch our air bottle, gloves, coat, etc. They learn to come to us in an emergency rather than hiding.

These programs are normally presented at day care and pre-school centers, but any organized gathering of children in this age group may be considered. Please contact us at (513) 985-1633 for additional information.
