An Exciting Time for Montgomery Parks

The verdict is in and the community has spoken,
Montgomery has a wonderful park system and great recreation programs. In order to ensure that our parks and recreation facilities continue to meet the needs of the community, the City of Montgomery embarked on the development of a parks master plan.

Montgomery’s Park master plan is based on an analysis of this community’s comments on the current park system and needs for the future, and it will be unique to Montgomery. Beginning with an inventory and analysis of existing park facilities and programs, the master plan is considering additional uses that may be required currently and flushing out ideas for change in anticipation of future demands. Montgomery’s park master plan will be a workable plan that outlines strategic steps for the next ten years.

To ensure that this proposed plan is being driven by the needs of the entire community, there will be two public meetings in late August where the residents and park users will be asked to provide comment on the proposed suggestions in the report, and the City will gather feedback to make final amendments to the parks master plan.

There are some exciting new trends surfacing in the process which will improve and tailor the Park system for Montgomery’s residents. Such proposals for consideration and investigation include “greening” ideas for the parks such as
geothermal heating of some restroom facilities so that they would be available for yearround use; solar heating of the pool and family oriented additions to pool site; improving the annex to make it more usable and more user-friendly for the residents; and improving drainage and site amenities for some of the ball fields. Another idea that has come out of the parks master plan would include a functional redesign of Pfieffer Park to designate this park as a
crossroads signature in Montgomery.

When the master plan is finished, the City of Montgomery will have a blueprint for a superb park plan by utilizing exciting enhancements to its existing
park system to serve the residents of Montgomery well into the future.
