Compost: improve your garden, save the landfill

Backyard composting is one of the simplest, most effective steps that can be taken to reduce the amount of waste requiring transfer to landfill sites.  The EPA estimates that nearly one-third of residential waste is comprised of compostable materials.

Composting these materials reduces disposal costs, increases the life of landfills, saves energy and reduces air and water pollution by reducing the production of methane gas and leachate in landfills.

An added bonus is that composting generates large volumes of highly desirable compost which improves soil texture and provides the organic matter and nutrients necessary for plant growth and survival.  Compost is a low cost alternative to artificial soil amendments and reduces the need for water, fertilizers and pesticides.
