July 4th ParadeWhat’s more American than an Independence Day Parade? After a patriotic concert in Montgomery Park on July 3, residents will gather for Montgomery’s annual Independence Day Parade on Wednesday, July 4. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., parade participants will depart from various assembly locations along Cooper Road, proceed east to Montgomery Road, then travel north to Montgomery Park, where a family-oriented festival will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. As in years past, the parade features floats, vintage cars, military units, elected officials, and plenty of marching bands to celebrate the occasion.

July 4 FestivalGet Involved! Residents who would like to get involved can enter a unit in the parade or volunteer to assist in staging the day’s events. To participate in the parade, complete a registration form or call Julie Machon at 792-8316. Volunteers are needed to help organize and judge the parade units, and to drive their personal convertibles as an official transport for government officials participating in the parade. For info call DeAnna Gross at 792-8329.

Johnson Nature Preserve App LogoThe Johnson Nature Preserve app provides audio presentations, text and pictures on the many animals, plants and trees native to this park. There is also a story on the history of the park starting back when this area was the hunting grounds of the Miami and Shawnee tribes. Perfect for scout troops, science and nature class field trips and just a day in the park, this app expands the educational experience of Johnson Nature Preserve.

playgroundOne of the recommendations from the 2008 Park Master Plan Study was to keep playground equipment updated, safe and fun for the kids throughout Montgomery’s park system. In accordance with the recommendation, Swaim Park will be receiving new play features.

The existing equipment will remain, but may be relocated to make room for the Coconut Grove structure for ages 5-12, along with the Tilted Sky runner and the Centrix seat spin around, also recommended for the 5-12 age group. Safe zones will also be extended around the existing equipment along with the removal of some obstacles to enhance the recommended safe zones.

Installation will begin soon with a completed date of June 1 expected, weather permitting.
