The application deadline for the Montgomery Citizens’ Leadership Academy (MCLA) has been set for September 30. Limited to 25 local residents, members of community groups or those who work in Montgomery, last year’s Academy, conducted January through March, truly lived up to its billing as “The Coolest Civics Class You’ll Ever Take.”
The MCLA is offered only once annually to select individuals eager to go beyond the surface and experience firsthand the innermost workings of community operations. As one MCLA graduate stated, “I never thought civics could be so interesting, engaging and fun!” “I see sharp minds at work, friendships being forged, and enlightenment about the community occurring,” said Vice Mayor Ken Suer. “Developing educated citizens is an investment in our future. Their enthusiasm and positive outlooks are highly refreshing and inspiring.”
Offering lecturettes, special guest speakers, off- site tours and participant interaction, debate/discussion and simulation exercises, the ten workshops provide total immersion into issues that are important to the citizens of Montgomery. Sessions with titles such as, Zen and the Art of Citizenship, Dreams, Aspirations and Taxes…Is The Price Right? and Sycamore Schools…The 21st Century Learner, provide a “look behind the curtain” of timely and provocative topics facing the community.
Stop by the MCLA Alumni booth at the August 13 Montgomery Farmers’ Market from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.to learn more about the classes, opportunities and impact of the Montgomery Citizen’s Leadership Academy. For more information call Director of Citizen Engagement Ray Kingsbury at 792-8359.
