Become a Master Recycler

Interested in learning all there is to know about the recycling process, waste reduction and composting?

Here’s your chance to learn from the experts and become a Master Recycler by participating in the Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District’s Master Recycler Program.

The deadline to register is May 30th. Space is limited, so register early! Registration fee for all four classes: $10 if received by May 23; $15 if received after May 23. To become a Master Recycler, you must attend all classes. Refreshments will be provided.  Specific information on class dates, times and locations.

On Monday, May 7, 2012, at a special meeting called by the Council of the City of Montgomery, City Council unanimously appointed Wayne S. Davis as City Manager. After a thorough search among candidates who applied for the position, and after a comprehensive assessment and interview of the final candidates, City Council believes that Mr. Davis is the best candidate to be appointed to the permanent position. Mr. Davis has served as the Acting Manager since September 1, 2011. His appointment is effective immediately.

City Council also unanimously waived the City Charter requirements for residency. Mr. Davis will not be required to relocate to the City of Montgomery. The requirements of residency tied to public employment have been overruled by state law and confirmed by the Ohio Supreme Court. To resolve any question under the authority granted by the Charter, Council waived the requirement for Mr. Davis. Each year, the Fire Department opens fire hydrants throughout the City and allows the water to flow through the pipes. The hydrant-flushing program is very important to the maintenance of the City’s water system.

  • Flushes sediments from mainline pipes (which enhances water quality)
  • Verifies the proper operation of fire hydrants and valves
  • Helps find weaknesses in the water system
  • Checks for closed valves and weak flows in the water mains
  • Verifies ample flow for fire fighting

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN THE FIRE DEPARTMENT CREWS ARE FLUSHING HYDRANTS IN MY AREA?

If you see a crew flushing a hydrant on your street, avoid running tap water and using the washing machine or the dishwasher until the flushing is completed. If you see hydrant-flushing crews working in the area, please drive carefully and treat them like any other road construction crew.

 WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER HYDRANT FLUSHING?

  • If tap water is used during flushing, it could come out full of sediment that causes discoloration. If you encounter discolored water, shut the water off and wait several minutes. After waiting, check the clarity by running cold water for a few minutes allowing new water to work its way into your pipes. If the water is clear it’s OK to use. If not, wait a few more minutes and check again. In some cases, there may be slight discoloration for a few hours. This discoloration only affects the appearance of the water; it does not affect the taste or water quality.
  • Avoid washing laundry. Wait until the water turns clear at the tap, and then wash a load of dark clothes first. Hot water tanks can hold discolored water for some time after the cold water runs clear.
  • In the event your laundry is stained from discolored water, call Greater Cincinnati Water Works at (513) 591-7700. They will deliver a laundry aid to remove the stain. Do NOT put stained laundry in the dryer.
  • If pressure or volume seems low, check your faucet screens for trapped particles.

WHY DOES MY WATER LOOK FUNNY AFTER HYDRANT FLUSHING?

When a hydrant is opened, there will be temporary incidences of discolored water while fine sediment particles are flushed out. There is no health hazard associated with the discolored water. Allow a few hours for discoloration to dissipate. To verify water is clear, run your cold-water tap for a few minutes.

Tracy RobleroMontgomery City Planner Tracy Roblero, and her daughter Julianna, appeared this morning on Fox 19 Morning Extra on behalf of Shriners Hospital for Children.  As a part of National Burn Awareness Week, Julianna and Tracy appeared to increase awareness about burn injuries, burn prevention and safety measures in the home.  Tracy and Julianna were happy to appear on behalf of Shriners Hospital as thanks for the care and attention they received after a burn injury Julianna sustained around Christmas in 2010.

traffic signalWork will begin in February, as weather permits, on many of Montgomery’s major signalized intersections. Complete General Construction Company has been awarded the contract to update every signalized intersection on Montgomery Road from Weller Road to Kennedy Lane and at the Cooper Road-Main Street intersection.

The work will introduce the latest technology in LED signals for higher visibility and lower energy costs, emergency vehicle preemption devices to detect approaching emergency vehicles,
natural gas back-up generators, and upgraded LED pedestrian crosswalk devices and signage.

This project is funded primarily by a $540,000 grant from the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments. Under the grant, Montgomery will pay only 20 percent of the project cost.

Completion of the work is projected for mid-August. Regular construction updates are provided on the City’s website as work progresses.
