Work has begun on the Montgomery Signals Project, which will replace traffic lights with new state-ofthe- art LED technology. Not only will the new lights provide motorists with a brighter, more visible signal, they also will save significant costs on electricity.

Complete General Construction Company has begun work at Kennedy Lane and will proceed north to Weller Road, including work at every signalized intersection on Montgomery Road and also the Cooper Road-Main Street intersection. Each intersection will have emergency vehicle preemption devices installed to detect approaching emergency vehicles, natural gas back-up generators, and upgraded LED pedestrian crosswalk devices and signage.

This project is funded primarily by a $540,000 grant from the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments. Under the grant, Montgomery will pay only 20 percent of the project cost. The project completion date is scheduled for early August.

Sycamore has broken ground on the new Maple Dale Elementary and district offices.  These projects are funded through two separate financial sources: Maple Dale is funded through the 2010 bond issue and the district offices are funded through the proceeds of the offices on Cooper Road and a Certificate of Participation which allows the district to make payments over the next 15 years from the district cash reserve.

During the ceremony, Keith Kelly, assistant superintendent of human resources and business operations said, “We have come together to support our students–our future–and provide them with a learning environment they deserve. The students who will attend the new Maple Dale Elementary will benefit from better day lighting and ventilation, optimum temperatures, less background noise in classrooms, clustering of classrooms to create learning communities, and more. The new Maple Dale and district offices will also include many energy efficient systems, including geothermal heating and cooling, which will lower energy costs by approximately 50 percent per year.”

With summer providing perfect weather for outside construction, work is in full swing on a variety of local projects:

The Pfeiffer Road/Storybook Drive Improvement Project has been substantially completed with final restoration and punchlist items remaining. This project included new traffic signals, ADA curb ramps, storm pipe installation, retaining wall, fencing, new sidewalk including a portion of pervious concrete walk, and the intersection has been resurfaced with asphalt and also includes new pavement markings.

The 2011 Street Resurfacing Program which includes approximately 3.7 centerline miles of roadway throughout the City is underway with Taulman Alley, Orchard Club Drive, Stonemeadow Lane, Whitebridge Court, and the culde- sac of Jolain Drive being substantially completed. The second phase of the resurfacing program will begin after the July 4th holiday and include project areas within and adjacent to the Reserve Subdivision as well as within the Tanagerwoods Subdivision. Streets on this year’s program are listed on the City’s website. The Cornell Road Sidewalk Project has been awarded to Prus Construction, Inc. and is currently underway. The sidewalk is being installed on the north side of Cornell Road in front of Sycamore High School and includes approximately 6,500 S.F. of sidewalk with a portion of it being pervious concrete walk. The project also includes a bioswale which may be utilized as an educational resource. It is anticipated that this project will be completed by mid-August.

The Montgomery City Council authorized City Manager Cheryl Hilvert to enter into a contract with Prus Construction Co. to complete the City of Montgomery’s 2011 Street Resurfacing Program at the May 4, 2011 City Council Business Session. A May 27 pre-construction meeting with Prus Construction identified the work schedule and various project “milestones”. Work on the project is anticipated to begin in early to mid June.  Information about the project will be mailed to each resident with property frontage on the street segments scheduled for construction during the June-September time frame.

Duke Energy has announced that installation of Smart Grid equipment on its electric and gas distribution systems in Montgomery will begin in late March. The anticipated completion timeframe for this work is early May. This first phase involves work on utility poles in areas served by overhead electric and on-pad mounted transformers in areas with underground electrical service. No interruption of electrical service is anticipated during the work. The second phase of Smart Grid installation is set to begin in mid May and will include approximately 90 percent of the Duke residential customers in Montgomery. That work includes replacement of electrical meters as well as upgrades to gas meters. Meter replacement and upgrades will result in brief service interruptions for every Duke Energy customer during the time required to remove and replace the meter/meter components. Work will be completed by Duke Energy and its subcontractor, VSI. Residents should begin to receive information from Duke Energy about the upcoming meter replacement work, set to begin on houses throughout Montgomery beginning in mid May. Meter replacement and upgrades are scheduled on approximately 150 houses each day. All meter replacement/ upgrades throughout Montgomery are scheduled for work from mid-May to mid- June. Additional information is available about Duke Energy Smart Grid on the Duke Energy website at duke-energy.com or by calling 1-888-807-5927.

Installation of the large diameter water main throughout the City of Montgomery has been completed.  More than 17,000 feet of water main was installed throughout Montgomery and Blue Ash, with 14,750 feet (2.8 miles) installed in Montgomery since June 4.

Water main installation on Jolain Drive was completed on November 11. Filling the final 5,000 foot section of 36 inch diameter main with water in preparation for pressure, chlorination and bacteria testing began on November 12 and was projected to be completed by November 24.

At deadline for this publication, projections for final restoration on three roads impacted by water main are more encouraging than previously projected. City of Montgomery and GCWW staff have resolved all details and have committed to resurface the following three roadways in early December, weather and conditions permitting:

  • Jolain Drive (between Zig Zag Road and Tollgate Lane)
  • Tollgate Lane (north of Jolain Drive)
  • Schoolhouse Lane (east of Tollgate Lane)

GCWW project are available on the Montgomery website, by becoming a Face Book fan, or by following the project on Twitter. Recorded messages regarding construction will be available through December 10 by calling the City of Montgomery Construction Hotline at 792-8345. This information line will switch over to the City’s Snow Removal Information line during the week of December 13.  For additional information contact Public Works Director Bob Nikula at 792-8311.
